On the death of the pope, the conclave meets in Rome. Early ballots end with black smoke, since none of the main candidates reaches the quorum. After several rounds of voting, Cardinal Melville is elected, though he had not previously been considered a frontrunner.

At the moment of the public announcement, with the faithful are gathered in St. Peter's Square and the cardinal proto-deacon ready to announce the name of the new pope, the newly elected pope has a panic attack and fails to appear on the balcony.

The spokesman of the Holy See evades questions from the press and the curiosity of the outside world by reporting that the new pontiff felt the need to sequester himself in prayer and reflection before taking office, and by explaining that he will make his official appearance within a few hours. This does not happen.

In accordance with the laws of the Church, until the pope appears before the people on the balcony, the ceremony of election is not over and no one in the conclave can have contact with the outside world.

The College of Cardinals, deeply concerned by the crisis and the depression from which the new pope seems to be suffering, calls in the psychoanalyst Professor Brezzi. The cardinals react to the psychoanalyst with some suspicion, but still allow him to examine the new pope. Brezzi, in the presence of the cardinals, tries to initiate a psychotherapy session which, however, fails to reveal anything to explain the depression and helplessness that plague the pontiff.

Brezzi reveals that his ex-wife is also a psychoanalyst and the newly elected pope is taken secretly to see her, but escapes his minders and runs away during a walk. Unaware of his absence, the cardinals kill time by playing games, ranging from cards to an international volleyball tournament organized by Brezzi.

Vatican spokesman Marcin Rajski makes everyone believe that the Pope is in his quarters in prayer, and eventually the cardinals find Melville and give him another chance to announce his acceptance. However, when Melville comes out onto the balcony he declines his new position, claiming "I am not the leader you need," and retreats back into St. Peter's.

Watch Il Futuro online review:
Il Futuro has received mainly positive reviews from critics, as it currently holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews.

Bill Weber of Slant Magazine gave the film two out of four stars, saying "Il Futuro is a well-crafted 'literary' film in mostly counterproductive ways. Following a dubiously motivated opening homage to the aerial highway shot that begins The Shining, the film is a good-looking series of ambitious tropes and contrivances that don't seem to express much significance, even when it settles into its own haunted-house setting halfway through."

The film opens with a quote from Céline's Journey to the End of the Night: “To travel is very useful, it makes the imagination work, the rest is just delusion and pain. Our journey is entirely imaginary, which is its strength.” The main character is an aging socialite, Jep Gambardella, who once wrote a famous novel in his twenties, only to retire into a comfortable life writing cultural columns and throwing parties in Rome. After his 65th birthday party, he walks through the ruins and city streets, encountering the various characters, reflecting on his life, his first love, and sense of unfulfillment.

Watch La Grande Bellezza online review:
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 92% approval rating with a weighted average rating of 7.8/10 based on 100 reviews and certifying it "fresh". The critical consensus described it as "[d]azzlingly ambitious, beautifully filmed, and thoroughly enthralling, The Great Beauty offers virtuoso filmmaking from writer/director Paolo Sorrentino." The film holds a score of 86/100 on Metacritic based on 29 reviews, signifying "universal acclaim."

Robbie Collin at The Daily Telegraph awarded Sorrentino's film the maximum five stars and described it as "a shimmering coup de cinema". He likened it to Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City and Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita in its ambition to record a period of Roman history on film. "Rossellini covered the Nazi occupation of 1944; Fellini the seductive, empty hedonism of the years that followed. Sorrentino's plan is to do the same for the Berlusconi era," he wrote. Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter stated "Sorrentino's vision of moral chaos and disorder, spiritual and emotional emptiness at this moment in time is even darker than Fellini's (though Ettore Scola's The Terrace certainly comes in somewhere)." Critics have also identified other purposefully explicit film homages: to Roma, 8½, Scola's Splendor, Michelangelo Antonioni's La notte. In a negative review for the Financial Times, Antonia Quirke complained "an overtly grotesque way that suggests Fellini's Casanova or City of Women but feels a lot more like Baz Luhrmann." Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar named the film as one of the twelve best films of 2013, and placed it at the second place.

Watch Miele [Honey] online review:
'Honey' is an Italian/French co-production about euthanasia. A young woman (Jasmine Trinca, who has absolutely gorgeous eyes) helps those seriously ill people who wish to end their suffering to do so. She does this work because she believes it is the right thing to do, although she's no campaigner. But her self-confidence is challenged by Grimaldi (Carlo Cecchi), a middle-aged man who requests her help to die not because he is suffering, but simply because he is tired of life. A relationship of - perhaps - mutual fascination forms between the pair as Honey tries to understand Grimaldi's choice and to convince him to change his mind, while Grimaldi stubbornly insists the whys and wherefores are none of her business - he simply wants to employ her to help him die.

Trinca does well in her leading role, convincing in a detachment that gradually turns into greater emotional involvement in what she's doing. In his role as 'grouchy old man', Cecchi is offered less scope. The film does not seem to judge whether euthanasia is right or wrong, but allows the viewer to make up his/her own mind. The ending is perhaps needlessly soppy, but done in a thankfully low-key way. All-in-all, well worth seeing.

The story revolves around Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush), an elderly and esteemed, but somewhat eccentric, managing director of an auction house. For some reason, Claire always refuses to be seen in person. An astute young artificer, Robert (Jim Sturgess), then aids Oldman in restoring and reassembling some odd mechanical parts he finds amongst Claire's belongings, while also giving him advice on how to befriend her, and how to deal with his feelings towards her.
